Deep tech and the turning point: From research to operational readiness

Europe’s ability to defend itself effectively also depends on deep tech innovations – from artificial intelligence to new materials, semiconductor technologies, and quantum computing. However, there are significant barriers to the rapid transfer of such innovations from research to the defense sector. The reasons for this include a lack of networking between military and civilian ecosystems, formal barriers, and a lack of investment in research and development. In addition, companies considering entering the security and defense industry are confronted with extensive regulations and high requirements.

Key questions:

Which deep tech areas will be crucial for European defense in the next three to five years? In which of these areas are Germany and the EU currently strong, and in which are there acute dependencies? How can Germany and Europe achieve technological sovereignty in crucial deep tech areas?
How can R&D and technology transfer in Europe be designed in such a way that deep tech innovations reach military operational readiness more quickly?
What mechanisms can accelerate market entry and scaling for suppliers and start-ups in the security and defense industry?
